The Chat tab inside a space. This is where the feed lives: messages, media, voice, resonances.

Writing

The bar at the bottom. Attachments and voice on the left, presence and send on the right.

Presence lives for 5 minutes and fades by itself. This is deliberate: a status that hangs forever stops meaning anything. A space can have its own states, invented at creation (spaces).

Reply — the reply button on a message. A reply does not just quote: it is addressed to the author, and for them it is a noticeable signal (signals).

Mention — @ and the start of a name, then a suggestion. A mention is a signed part of the message, not a text search, so it reliably arrives as a signal and does not fire by accident.

Editing — an edited message is marked “edited”. The past is not rewritten: an edit is a new event, not a substitution for the old one.

Resonances

Resonances are reactions, but with meaning, not just a picture.

• Short press — this space’s default meaning (usually “Resonates”).
• Long press or hover — the palette of meanings.
• Press your own mark — remove it.
• Right-click on a chip — who set it (if the space shows that).

The protocol’s seven base meanings are a shared vocabulary that any client understands:

One resonance per person per message — a new one replaces the old.

The space’s palette (owner)

The ✧ button in the header. Up to six meanings, each with a key, a label and a mark. Plus three switches:

• allow any emoji — whether arbitrary emoji are allowed beyond the palette;
• show counts — whether to show the numbers;
• surface effects — whether resonances come alive on screen.

Effects

With surface effects on, a resonance does not just add a chip:

one response       →  a flash of the mark next to the message
a series           →  a rivulet along the edge of the card
a flurry           →  a fountain

All of this is drawn only on your screen and sends nothing to the network. Reaction history is never replayed: opening an old message with thirty responses, you see a trace, not fireworks. The system “reduce motion” setting and the space’s “still” mode turn effects off entirely.

The shelf

Conversation flows, and some things should remain. Keep in space (the icon on a message) puts it on the shelf — the Shelf tab.

• Anyone can keep something, and everyone can see it.
• A note can be added to the save — why this belongs here.
• Only your own decision can be removed: the shelf is made of people’s decisions, not of one person’s opinion.

What it means that a message has left

The app never says “delivered” when all it knows is that a relay accepted the bytes. The wording is chosen so that every phrase is true:

The last line most often appears with radio and looks like this:

Waiting for a wider path — 41 KB, and the radio carries 2.1 KB. It goes as soon as the internet or the local network is back. Nothing is lost.

Nothing is lost and nothing needs to be sent again: as soon as a wider path appears, it goes by itself. Why — radio.

An honest feed

If the space contains events you cannot read, they are not hidden. The feed will show a line like “3 moments you can’t read here yet (no key — shown, not hidden)”.

This can happen legitimately: for example, in a space with the “the past stays with those who lived it” policy a newcomer sees that history exists, but not its contents. Showing the fact and not the contents is more honest than pretending nothing is there.

Forwarding

The forward button on a message. Forwarding is a quote, not a transfer of the signature: the recipient sees that you say such-and-such wrote this, and the interface phrases it exactly that way. Details, and what does NOT travel — forwarding.
