Two waves, one lesson: every field complaint of the past week was about legibility, not features — “read or not?”, “the history is unclear”, “I don’t see the room”. People arrive from ordinary messengers, and each unfamiliar pixel is a tax on entry.
🚪 The familiar shell. The list on the left reads like an inbox now: the room’s mark, its name, the last moment with who said it, the time. Under a room’s name it says who is here — 2 people — and the kind of place it is moved to the hover. Two new views sit right after the conversation in every room: Files (every photo, voice note, track and document anyone shared) and Links (every link — a link card or the first URL inside a message). Neither writes anything new; both are the same log, read as a shelf. And every room gets a mark from a built-in set of twenty line icons — the manifest carries only the name, an unknown one falls back to the generated glyph, so old and new clients agree on what they see.
What we took from the messengers is the layout. What we refused is their smuggled promises: no “5 drawing now”, no automatic online, no typing lights, no calls. Presence remains what a person declares.
✦ A sky. A shared drawing that is a message (ADR-036). There is no canvas object that everybody edits: a sky is one moment in the chat, and every gesture is its own small signed event pointing at it — points on a 128×128 grid, one byte each, three levels of glow. Strokes commute, so the picture is the union and the log is the merge; the film order is the same on every replica, which is what makes “watch how it was drawn” possible. An erase removes only your own strokes. The colour is the person — every client derives the hue from your principal, so who drew what needs no legend. Nothing is sent while the finger moves and nobody is told who is drawing; the picture updating is the only presence. A sky cools at four thousand strokes and says so.
Start one from the attach menu (📎 → sky). Clients on earlier builds see “✦ a shared sky” as a line of text and nothing breaks.
